The Need for a Removable Rack

As the weather turns cooler, cyclists often need to carry more gear. Frame bags and jersey pockets often prove insufficient. Previously, I used a permanent pannier rack, but it lacked the convenience I desired.

I wanted something easily attachable and detachable, allowing me to customize my setup for various weather conditions. A removable rack was the perfect solution, offering adaptability for sunny days or rainy rides.

Introducing the Topeak Beam Rack

I discovered the Topeak Beam Rack, a lightweight and easily attachable system. It mounts using a quick-release lever similar to a bicycle wheel, ensuring simple installation and removal.

Topeak Beam Rack: Types and Fit

The Topeak Beam Rack comes in three types: A-shaped, flat, and V-shaped to accommodate different bike frames. This A-shaped model fits perfectly above my seat post adjuster.

Bag Options and the Arkel Tailrider

The Topeak Beam Rack doesn't have attachment points for traditional panniers. It requires a top-loading bag. While Topeak offers a compatible bag, I used an Arkel Tailrider.

The Arkel bag isn't a perfect fit but functions well and offers expansion. It features velcro straps for secure attachment, a place for rear lights, reflective strips, and sturdy pockets.

Winter Riding Essentials: Hydration and Warmth

Winter cycling requires carrying warm drinks. A standard flask is useful, but it can be tricky to secure on the bike. A clever online hack involves using an old drinks bottle to cradle the flask.

This prevents movement and provides a convenient carrier. I also use a smaller water bottle (to avoid wheel interference), ensuring ample hydration on cold rides.
